Stress – Key Facts
- Cause 13 million lost working days each year at a cost of £3.7billion to society (HSE)
- Leading cause of absence in white collar industries and a close second among blue collar workers (HSE)
- 58% of employees complained of being stressed at work. This figure increased to 63% in organisations with over 1000 employees (TUC, 2004)
- Very little is known about those who are unable to work due to stress-related problems. This lack of knowledge means that it is very difficult to develop appropriate interventions (HSE).
The Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) suggests that 75% of companies have made changes to the way they manage absence in the last two years, (Employee Absence 2004: A survey of management policy and practice, 6 July 2004). Respondents of a CIPD survey identified the most effective interventions for stress as:
- Greater involvement of line managers to combat short-term absence
- Increasing the use of occupational health professionals to manage long-term absence.
